Almost every educated individual brushes their teeth on a daily basis, but most of them do not pay any attention to the toothpaste they are using for doing so. Even when they step out to purchase toothpaste, they simply grab the handiest one and don’t give it a second thought. However, they are ignorant of the fact that it’s necessary for them to choose the toothpaste that’s in accordance with their dental needs and requirements. Not realizing this fact can have long term consequences for people in the long run and not just in terms of money. For instance, if the right toothpaste is not chosen, the health of teeth and gums goes into decline. They may become weak, start bleeding and lose their clean and shiny look.

This is due to the fact that not all the ingredients that are used for formulating toothpaste are beneficial for dental health. In fact, some ingredients are downright dangerous and are known to cause a myriad of health complications amongst individuals. Therefore, it is essential that people make an informed decision when they are shopping for toothpaste in order to promote optimal oral health. There are countless brands of toothpaste available in the market these days, each one having one quality or another. Each toothpaste has been formulated to fulfill one dental need. Some common examples are:

Whitening Toothpaste

There are some food items such as coffee or habits like smoking that can lead to yellowing or discolored teeth. This can ruin the appearance of your face and is something everyone wants to avoid. Whitening toothpaste, as indicated by the name, has been designed to improve the color of the teeth. Scrubbing materials and chemicals are used in these toothpastes for removing the layer of plaque that has built up and bleaching agents are included for whitening purposes.

Tartar Control Toothpaste

When food particles are left in between the teeth, tartar is formed. Therefore, it is advised that people should brush their teeth after every meal for ensuring that no food is stuck in the teeth. Tartar is responsible for causing bad breath in some cases and can also weaken the teeth. Moreover, tartar can only be removed by a dentist because it becomes hard and has to be scratched off. Using tartar control toothpaste means that it will not accumulate on the teeth.

Fluoride Toothpaste

While considered to be the best toothpaste in the market, it is not necessarily beneficial. Fluoride is extremely useful in preventing tooth decay, cavities and plaque, but it is a toxin that can have other health consequences such as liver and kidney malfunction, heart problems etc. Fluoride should only be used in moderation because excessive exposure to this harsh chemical is very dangerous.

Desensitizing Toothpaste

With time or because of some dental problem, teeth tend to become sensitive. Using toothpastes having harsh abrasives and chemicals can cause irritation and pain. Desensitizing toothpaste is especially formulated with simple and natural ingredients to ensure that sensitive teeth are not bothered.
